Dear Scholars and Families,
This is an overview of the whole week, so it is long, but each day you can see updates in the 6th grade homework section of this site and on Google Classroom. You can refer back to this all week, for questions you may have. It contains a lot of important information.
I am writing to you on Monday, no school today, but trying to get set up for the week. No school Monday so no Zoom meetings. First Zoom meeting will be Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Please plan on attending this for important information and because I miss you!
I have posted on Weebly and Classroom the assignments. Look there, and you can also refer back to this document or the long email I sent. No passwords or links can go on Weebly or Google Classroom sites. Email is the only place I can put the links and passwords. Use this email!
IMPORTANT *Students can turn in work many different ways: scan it, photograph it, google docs, email, texts. BUT.... THEY MUST HAVE THEIR NAME ON THEIR WORK! PLEASE CHECK THIS BEFORE SENDING! (not shouting, but definitely calling attention to this. It has been an issue all year in class, but with virtual class it is just too hard to manage. Your help and attention to this is greatly appreciated!

Thursday 1:30-2:00
*Smaller groups or one on one can be set up by texting Carol and we will do FaceTime.
I am attaching the Poster Problem and a packet of instructions that can be used by Parents and caregivers to help support scholars. (teacher guide made by me) I am also attaching the Gray Group Math work. It is important that you let the scholar figure out which group they are in because it is easier for them than it is for you! If they are not sure, they need to contact me.
Mathematics:
Poster Problem for the week: Pirates and their Treasures. This is designed to be a challenging problem, to encourage scholars to persevere with difficult problems. Scholars should start by deciding what they know from what is presented in the problem. They might think about what strategies they can use to try to solve it. Adults, please do not just show them the answers. This does not teach perseverance. We will meet via Zoom on Wednesday morning at 8 and Wednesday at 12 noon, to discuss this problem. It is attached to this email.
The Red Book Math that was assigned last week: page 122 and 124 and 125 will also be discussed on Wednesday. Page 122 section 3-64 a,b,c,d
And Page 124 section 3-69 a,b,c,d Page 125 section 3-72 Learning log
There is a google doc that you can make a copy of and rename as your own to use as an ongoing learning log for math with me. Share it with me and your parents so they can also see.
New work will be presented for the whole class. Scholars should plan on attending one of these instruction times. The links and passwords are only sent by an email-for everyone's safety. They are listed above.
Gray Group Math Meetings:
Ladyhawks we will meet Wednesday 1:00-1:30
Hawkeyes we will meet Wednesday 1:30--2:00 p.m.
Those scholars who worked last week with the fractions and factors, look for an email with your group name and meeting times which will be on Thursday, from 1:00-1:30 and 1:30-2:00
Other Fun Math: Some scholars have asked for more math, and so I am providing it at a variety of levels and I hope you all enjoy it. It is not mandatory.
Garage Math: My friend Jill, a brilliant educator, posted some math problems on her garage door. I loved it. I took a photo and I am sharing it with my scholars. They are encouraged to give it a go! Not mandatory.
30 Questions A 6th Grade Challenge: This is a Google Doc that I have shared with them. The problems appear on giant red rectangles. Scholars create a doc to share their work with me, solving as many as they can.
Optional Science: I was bummed to miss science on Friday due to no internet. Please plan on joining me on Friday from 10:30 to 12:00. *Preparations for hands on science: If you have a small balloon, please fill it up to make a small water balloon-2 3 inch diameter. Freeze this. Locate a flashlight that would be large enough to rest that ice ball on top of.... If you are able to pick up some red cabbage as part of your regular store run before Friday, that would be great! I will be talking with everyone on Tuesday, 5:30 Zoom meeting about what to do with the cabbage and the water balloon for science time. Also still want that pepper, soap and shallow dish with water.
