Hello, my name is Carol Smith and it is an honor to teach and learn with you. This year marks my 36th year in education and my second at JCSMO! I love the profession. I have two young adult sons, Kyle (25) and Nick (20). Our family lives in Encinitas, but my roots and truest home is Colorado. I came to California for college and have lived here since. I graduated from UCSD and received my bachelors degree in psychology, my multiple subjects teaching credential and my masters in teaching and learning- mathematics curriculum. I have been a classroom teacher, private tutor, and opened my own educational camps. And I have been a parent, so I see both sides! I love the mountains, big trees, meerkats and elephants, challenging problems and the discussions that go with them, and meeting new and interesting people. I do volunteer work with refugees from around the world and have been fortunate enough to befriend many in our community here in San Diego. I have learned a great deal from them about the human struggle, the value of family and the importance of hope. I learned the value of community service from my mom and it was her greatest gift to me. I learned the value of education from my father, and that was his greatest gift to me.
There are many things that I love about working here at JCSMO, but I especially like the partnership between parents/families, scholars and teachers. I love that we teach to high standards and are seeking evidence and depth and complexity in our discussions and investigations. I love that we teach to the whole scholar through a variety of means and that we are student driven. I look forward to the opportunity to know your child, and help him or her to grow intellectually and socially. I have a few defining words and phrases that it will not take long for the scholars to be able to tell you what they are. I will wait to tell you and I will ask you at Back to School Night if you know them yet! Thank you for sharing your children with me.
Respectfully and With Gratitude,
Carol Smith
