dirSCHOLARS MUST BE WRITING THEIR MATH AND SCIENCE OR ANY ASSIGNMENTS FROM CAROL SMITH, DAILY IN THEIR PLANNERS! THIS IS NOT AN OPTIONAL THING TO DO. IT IS A REQUIREMENT FOR ALL SCHOLARS FOR ASSIGNMENTS FROM CAROL SMITH. (Not yelling. Definitely calling attention to this. Today in class, when I went to continue our math lesson, I was disappointed to learn that the majority of scholars had not done what I had asked them to do as a MINIMUM for homework. This meant scholars were not prepared for class. When I checked the planners, I discovered many scholars are NOT recording their assignments in their planners. Every day, I take time to record on the board and in the chat on Zoom, what scholars are supposed to write in their planners. I instruct them to "get out your planners" and I walk them through it step by step. Every day. I do this because it is really good training for them to learn to keep track of their work being recorded. I was very disappointed that this has not been happening. I will now be checking of for this to be done, by requiring scholars to show me their planners. I would greatly appreciate your support in reinforcing this important skill, if you could please ask your scholar to see their planners, to be sure they are recording it. I do not do a weekly check off sheet because I do the planner. The school purchases the planners for all scholars with the idea that they will be recording their work in these and developing this life long skill for organization. Your support is appreciated.
This information about math and science should already be in their planner in a slightly shorter form and it is typed here for a more detailed explanation.
Math: Scholars have a few tasks to FINISH UP as the Friday Homeschool work. All of these assignments were started in class at the first part of the week.
Poster Problem: The Brownie Problems- there are three brownie problems and all involved sharing brownies in fair shares or evenly. Scholars were introduced to this problem on Monday. I hold office hours on Mondays so anyone can get extra help then. On Wednesday, scholars participated in Hint Day and should have been recording the ideas to help them given by me and their peers. This is all about showing their process in how they solved these three problems. This is due on Monday March 1, 2021. A photo/scan of it should be uploaded into Google Classroom to verify completion of work prior to 8:00 a.m. Monday. Scholars should have the assignment with them in class Monday ready to go over it, We always go over our work on the Poster Problems and scholars are directed to use a blue or green or purple pen to show the ideas that others shared that they did not do.This is how they continue to learn from each other different strategies for problem solving.
Percent Flash Cards part one ant two: On Monday, scholars were introduced to the percent flash cards and practiced building numbers using their base ten blocks. We showed how numbers can be represented as a decimals, a fractions, a percent, and ratios and rates. The first day, scholars were given four decimal numbers and instructed to build a concrete model of them with the base ten sets. Next. they were instructed to use colored pencils to shade in the representations of those numbers.
Tuesday we took MAP tests in class, so there was no new math homework, allowing for scholars to focus on the Poster Problem and the Percent Flash cards, previously started.
On Wednesday, scholars were introduced to the language used in their RED MATH BOOKS for this activity. Instruction was given and Page 122 section 3-64 and page 124 section 3-69 were assigned. Scholars were asked to complete as a minimum, one problem from page 122 and one problem from page 124 by Thursday class time so our lesson could continue. They were also asked to have their noodles with them for class Thursday.
On Thursday, very few scholars had the minimum assignment completed. This caused me to need to do a completely different lesson. We worked together in class on Which One is Better (wksht 2.2) and completed the first two problems in class.
Scholars need to finish this page (2 more problems) and also finish the 8 problems assigned from the RED MATH BOOK, listed above, and the brownie Poster Problem as Thursday night homework and Friday homeschool work.
SCIENCE: Scholars need to complete the "rock attributes size" chart. They were given a large pebble and some sand. They were directed to glue these onto the paper. Next they were to locate in their environment the other sized rocks as samples and glue them on, too. A sample was shown to them and a photo is posted in the science classroom.
Scholars are also asked to complete their description writing for their HIDE AND GO SEEK ROCKS in the slide deck that is in the science stream. This assignment was given a long time ago, revised on February 18th and I have been waiting for scholars to complete it. It must be done by March 1.
Scholars are also asked to communicate with their group members about their projects. They were assigned a topic to prepare a review session for their classmates. They must have a visual, they must have an interactive component and they must incorporate the icons and thinking strategies of depth and complexity. They should be doing some research and planning of their presentation. (ie Discussing by phone or email and creating an idea list and assigning tasks to each group member.)
